James Hurd Nixon is:

  • Co-Founder and Principal of Sustainable Systems, a for-profit corporation founded in 1994 and specializing in sustainable economic development, regional initiatives, and web strategies. 
  • Author or co-author of Sustainable Economic Development: Initiatives, Programs, and Strategies for Cities and Regions, the first integration of economic development and sustainability strategies; Sustainable Economic Development: Strategies for Cities and Regions, a step by step guideline for developing a sustainable economic development strategy; The Global Future of Green Capitalism, an exposition of the four greens – green savings, green opportunities, green talent, and green places; and In Search of a Revelation: An Essay in Spiritual Philosophy, a description of spiritual experience and the spiritual philosophy that evolved from them. 

Currently, his roles include:

  • Member of the Leadership Team for Our Planet Our Future, inspired by the call of 33 of the world’s most respected Faith Leaders to take urgent action on the climate emergency, this not-for-profit is pioneering Regeneration Development, utilizing nature-based and technology-based solutions to address climate change and poverty. 
  • Co-Founder and Treasurer of the Alliance for Community Development, a not-for-profit corporation that promotes access to capital for underrepresented entrepreneurs and presents the annual Bay Area Capital Connections event. 
  • Co-Founder and Treasurer of the TechEquity Collaborative, organizing the tech community to address economic inequity at its roots and an AI that enhances equity.
  • Board Member of Tamalpa Institute, offering expressive arts training programs and workshops for healing, education, and social transformation.
  • Chair of the Planetary Dance Committee, presenting the Planetary Dance in the Bay Area annually and coordinating the global Planetary Dance Community.
  • Founder and Coordinator of the Planetary Philosophy website: exploring and formulating different aspects of a comprehensive post-modern philosophy.

Previously, he has served as:

  • Lead consultant for the East Bay Broadband Consortium, a regional initiative to formulate and implement a Broadband strategy to acquire Gigabit Broadband and help bridge the digital divide in Alameda, Contra Costa, and Solano Counties in California.
  • Lead consultant for the $75 million Bay Area Equity Fund, the first impact venture fund to go to scale.
  • Lead consultant to the Bay Area Council for the Bay Area Family of Funds, a $250 million double bottom line investment initiative to make investments in low- and moderate- income neighborhoods in the Bay Area.
  • Lead consultant to the Mayor’s Office in San Antonio Texas for Mission Verde, San Antonio’s Sustainable Economic Development Strategy.
  • Team Leader for the Global Urban Development Team that produced Prosperity in Paradise, a Sustainable Economic Development Strategy for Sarasota County Florida.
  • Co-coordinator of three Building the Sustainable Economy Conferences, two in New York City, and one in Havana Cuba, which brought together leaders of the Sustainable Development Movement from around the U.S. and the world.
  • Senior Vice President of Progressive Asset Management, the first full-service broker/dealer specializing in socially responsible investment, coordinating Social Research, Broker Services, and Investment Banking.
